Why the NFL Plays International Games
The NFL plays games abroad because that’s where its growth is. The league already dominates American sports TV, so the new fans, sponsors and media money sit overseas, and nothing builds a fan base like a regular-season game that counts. That’s how one game at Wembley in 2007 became nine games on four continents in 2026, with owners approving up to 10 from 2027.
The fans are already there. Mexico is the league’s biggest market outside the U.S., Brazil is right behind it, and Germany has grown so fast that ticket demand has outstripped supply at every regular-season game played there. When the Bernabéu hosted its first NFL game in 2025, 78,610 people showed up.
Teams now own countries. Since 2022, the Global Markets Program has handed clubs marketing and commercial rights in specific nations. All 32 teams take part across 22 markets, with Italy added for 2026. That’s why the Rams, who hold Australian rights, opened the 2026 season at the MCG, and why the Lions, who hold German rights, are in Munich.
It’s going to keep growing. Roger Goodell’s stated target is 16 international games a season, close to one every week, and the league wants every team playing abroad every year eventually. Clubs also lost the right to shield their home games from being moved overseas.
