Major League Baseball FAQs
How many games are in an MLB season?
Each team plays 162 regular-season games, 81 at home and 81 on the road, for 2,430 games across the league. Teams play almost every day in three- and four-game series, which makes it easy to fit a game into a weekend trip.
When does the MLB season start and end?
The regular season runs from late March through the end of September, and the postseason fills October, with the World Series sometimes reaching early November. The start of the 2027 season depends on whether owners and players reach a new labor deal.
Will there be an MLB lockout in 2027?
Probably. The labor agreement between MLB and the players' union expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 1, 2026. When the last deal expired in 2021, owners locked the players out the same night, and that lockout lasted 99 days and pushed back the start of the 2022 season.
The main fight is a salary cap. Owners say cost controls are needed to close the gap between teams that spend heavily on payroll and those that don't, and have reportedly proposed a $245 million cap with a $171 million floor. The players' union has opposed a cap throughout its history and wants younger players paid sooner and changes to revenue sharing. If there's no deal by early March, regular-season games are at risk.
How long does an MLB game last?
The average nine-inning game took 2 hours, 42 minutes in 2026, up slightly after the new ball-strike challenge system arrived. That's still more than 20 minutes shorter than in 2022, the last season before the pitch clock. Extra innings and rain delays can add more.
Which MLB stadiums have a retractable roof?
Seven: American Family Field (Brewers), Chase Field (Diamondbacks), Daikin Park (Astros), Globe Life Field (Rangers), loanDepot park (Marlins), Rogers Centre (Blue Jays) and T-Mobile Park (Mariners), whose roof covers the field without fully enclosing it. Tropicana Field (Rays) has the league's only fixed dome.
What is the oldest MLB stadium?
Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, opened in 1912. Wrigley Field in Chicago is second, opening in 1914. Both sit right in their neighborhoods, so the streets and bars around them are part of the gameday.
What is the biggest MLB stadium?
Dodger Stadium, with about 56,000 seats. Chase Field, T-Mobile Park, Coors Field and Yankee Stadium round out the five largest.
Where do the Athletics play?
The A's play at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, a minor league ballpark that seats about 14,000, while their new stadium is built in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas ballpark is targeted to open in 2028.
When do MLB tickets go on sale?
Each team sets its own date, usually over the winter, and season-ticket holders get first access. Opening Day, rivalry series and giveaway nights go fast, and a 2027 lockout could push sale dates back. For sold-out games, resale marketplaces like Vivid Seats let you compare seats and prices.
Which MLB ballparks are the most hitter-friendly?
Coors Field in Denver, by a wide margin. A mile above sea level, the thin air lets the ball carry farther. Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati and Rate Field in Chicago are also known as home-run parks, thanks to shorter fences and wind patterns.
